# Balearic Islands Tourism Tax: Rates, Exemptions & Payment

> Understand the Balearic Islands Sustainable Tourism Tax — what you'll pay, when, where, and who's exempt — so you can budget accurately before you travel.

If you're staying in Ibiza or Formentera, you'll pay a small mandatory tax directly to your accommodation on arrival. Known officially as the *Impost de Turisme Sostenible* (Sustainable Tourism Tax), it's collected by every accommodation provider in the Balearic Islands — not by LeibTour or any other booking platform. This page explains what it is, how much to expect, and how to factor it into your travel budget.

## What Is the Sustainable Tourism Tax?

The Balearic Islands Sustainable Tourism Tax is a regional levy introduced by the Balearic government to fund environmental protection, sustainable tourism infrastructure, and the preservation of natural and cultural heritage across the islands. It applies to all paying guests staying in licensed tourist accommodation — including hotels, apartments, villas, and rental properties — throughout Ibiza and Formentera.

<Info>
  The tax is also commonly called the **eco-tax** (*ecotasa*). You may see either name used on your receipt or at the property.
</Info>

## Who Collects the Tax?

**The tax is paid directly to your accommodation provider at check-in.** LeibTour does not collect it, and it is not included in your booking total. You will pay it separately when you arrive at the property.

<Note>
  Remember to bring cash or a payment card on arrival to cover the tourism tax in addition to any security deposit the property may require. See [Check-In Instructions](/check-in-instructions) for the full list of what to bring on arrival day.
</Note>

## How Rates Are Calculated

The amount you pay depends on several factors, which means the exact figure varies from one booking to the next.

  <Card title="Season" icon="sun">
    Rates are higher during peak season and lower during the off-season. Ibiza and Formentera typically define high season as the summer months.

## Who Is Exempt?

Children under the age of 16 are typically exempt from the tourism tax and do not contribute to the total amount owed. Always confirm the current exemption rules with your accommodation provider at check-in, as regulations can be updated.

<Accordion title="Are there any other exemptions?">
  The primary personal exemption is for children under 16. Other exemptions may apply in specific circumstances — for example, stays related to healthcare or social services — but these are uncommon for typical tourist visits. Check the official Balearic government website for the full and current list of exemptions.
</Accordion>

## Does It Apply to Both Ibiza and Formentera?

Yes. The tax applies throughout the Balearic Islands, which includes both Ibiza and Formentera. Whether you're staying in San Antonio, Ibiza Town, Es Pujols, or anywhere else across the two islands, the same regional framework applies — though the specific rate will depend on the factors listed above.

## Where to Find Current Rates

Tax rates are set and updated by the Balearic regional government. For the most accurate and up-to-date figures, visit the official tourism tax information page:

## How to Budget for the Tax

Because the rate depends on your specific property and travel dates, the best approach is to get an estimate before you travel so there are no surprises on arrival.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Check the official rates page">
    Visit the Balearic government's tourism tax page and look up the rate category that matches your accommodation type and star rating.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Apply the seasonal rate">
    Check whether your travel dates fall within high or low season to find the correct daily rate.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Multiply by nights and guests">
    Multiply the daily per-person rate by the number of nights and the number of guests aged 16 or over.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the amount aside before you travel">
    Add the estimated total to your arrival-day budget alongside any security deposit. Paying in cash is often the easiest option.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  If you're travelling with a mixed group that includes children under 16, remember to exclude them from your calculation — you'll only pay for guests who are 16 or older.
